Give the Gift of Life This Holiday Season!

There’s something about this time of year - the nip in the air, the decorations, the extra family time - that makes us feel even closer to our communities. With the holidays nearly here, we at PrepMeKits once again find ourselves asking, what can we do to give back?


This year, the American Red Cross is facing its worst blood shortage in more than a decade, increasing the risk to our communities as we head into the winter. One way we respond to disasters is by organising blood drives to help those who are injured, but in the spirit of preparedness, why not act before a disaster occurs? 


By donating regularly, we can do our part to ensure that local hospitals always have the supplies they need in the event of an emergency. Donor blood is used to treat everything from car accidents to breast cancer, and most people will either need a blood transfusion, or have a loved one that does, at some point in their lives.


Did you know?

  • Every 2 seconds, someone in the U.S. needs donor blood.
  • Less than 38% of the population is eligible to give blood - and of that number, only about 3% donate yearly.
  • One donation can potentially save up to 3 lives!

If you are in good health, 17 years or older, and weigh at least 110 pounds, you are most likely eligible to give blood. Certain medications, travel history, or behaviors (such as recent tattoos or piercings) may affect your eligibility - you can find out more about that here. If you aren’t eligible to donate yourself, you can still help by volunteering, organizing a blood drive, or helping to educate your family and friends about blood donation. There are even programs that can get your kids’ school involved!


There are plenty of perks to giving blood - the warm glow of doing a good deed, a tasty snack, and an excuse to skip your workout! You won’t have to travel far, either: Use this link to find a blood drive near you.


Tips from the American Red Cross for the day of your donation:

  • Drink an extra 16 oz. of water or juice and eat a full, healthy meal before your appointment.
  • Wear a comfy shirt with sleeves that you can roll up above your elbows.
  • Bring a list of medications you’re taking, along with some music or a book to read while you donate.
  • Take it easy for the rest of the day. Stay hydrated, and no vigorous exercise or heavy lifting!
