Essentials of a First Aid Kit

First aid kits are the most imperative item to always have with you because you never know when you might get injured. It is best to have a kit always prepared; in your car, at work, at home, etc. and to know the location of the first aid kit. Store it in a place where it is easily accessible and in clear view so you can grab it quickly.

It is also best if the kit is light, so you do not put any more strain on yourself in an emergency. A first aid kit should be light enough that anyone can carry it—a child should be able to access and carry it to an elderly person. Many people create their first aid kits at home, but for others, they do not have the time to shop for every item crucial for a kit. Others can also purchase a pre-made kit at the store.

Here are five of the most essential items that belong in everyone’s first aid kit and to check for when purchasing a pre-made kit.

1. Antibiotics/medications: If you are someone with pre-existing medical conditions, always pack extra medications and keep track of the expiration dates. Other medications that should generally be in all first aid kits are pain relievers (Advil, Tylenol, Motrin, etc) burn creams, anti-diarrheal pills, and calamine lotion. They will help alleviate many conditions and prevent them from spreading further.

2. Antiseptic Wipes and Bandages: These go alongside antibiotics to clean up wounds and to protect the wound from getting infected.Antiseptic Wipes for First Aid

3. Scissors/Tweezers: These are critical items to have in first aid kits in case you need to cut bandages, medical tape, gauze, or anything else. Tweezers are also important in case you need to remove very small particles from a wound.

4. Sterile Cotton Swabs: Cotton swabs are used to apply medications such as ointments or creams. Using sterile cotton swabs is better than using your hands because contact with the wound could cause or spread infection.

5. Gloves: There may be times when you need to treat infected wounds or have direct contact with unknown pathogens. Disposable gloves will protect you from direct exposure to potentially dangerous and unknown pathogens.
